Capital Square Housing Trust Names Remppies President; Huffman Elevated to CEO
Gus Remppies

Capital Square Housing Trust said that its board of directors has appointed Gus Remppies to lead the real estate investment trust as president, a move that comes as the sponsor’s housing platform pushes toward a $400 million portfolio.

Remppies, a multifamily veteran with more than 30 years of experience, most recently served as president of Capital Square Living, the wholly owned property management subsidiary of Capital Square. In that role, he built the platform to more than 13,000 apartment homes across 58 properties in 23 markets, 35 cities and eight states, supported by more than 300 team members.

Capital Square Housing Trust has grown its portfolio to 10 multifamily communities valued at $389.5 million, concentrated in high-growth Southeastern markets, and the sponsor said it continues to pursue acquisitions that strengthen the REIT’s portfolio quality and geographic footprint.

“Gus’s decades of experience building and managing multifamily portfolios, including his work to help successfully shepherd Landmark Apartment Trust through one of the most challenging economic chapters in our nation’s history, make him exactly the right leader for the Housing Trust at this stage of its growth,” said Louis Rogers, chairman of the board. “The board was focused on finding a president with a proven record of institutional-quality execution and a deep understanding of the responsibilities that come with managing a shareholder-owned REIT. Gus meets that bar, and we’re confident his leadership will accelerate the growth we’re building for our shareholders.”

Before joining Capital Square Living, Remppies served as an executive officer of five public companies, including as executive vice president and chief investment officer of Cornerstone Realty Income Trust, an apartment REIT with a market capitalization of $1.5 billion. At Cornerstone, he oversaw the acquisition and development of more than 30,000 units and helped lead the company through its listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Following Cornerstone’s sale, Remppies co-founded Landmark Apartment Trust, a nontraded REIT formerly known as Grubb Ellis Apartment REIT, where he oversaw more than 700 team members. Across his career, Remppies has been responsible for the acquisition and financing of approximately 75,000 apartment units.

“I’m honored to take on this role at a pivotal moment for Capital Square Housing Trust,” Remppies said. “The REIT has built a high-quality portfolio, and I look forward to working with the board and the broader Capital Square platform to build on that foundation as we grow toward our next phase.”

As part of the leadership transition, Whit Huffman, previously president of the REIT, has become chief executive officer as well as continuing his role as chief strategy and investment officer. Rogers continues to serve as chairman of the board.

Capital Square Housing Trust reported average occupancy of 95.3% and average in-place rent of $1,525 per unit across its communities as of June 30, 2026. The REIT’s trailing 12-month revenue grew 82% year-over-year, which the company attributed to the expansion of its assets under management.

Capital Square Housing Trust is a REIT sponsored by Capital Square, a national real estate firm. The REIT acquires and manages a range of housing solutions, including highly amenitized and value-add multifamily communities as well as build-for-rent communities in growth markets, and has a majority-independent board of directors.

Capital Square is a vertically integrated, national real estate firm specializing in tax-advantaged real estate investments, including Delaware statutory trusts (DSTs) for Section 1031 exchanges, qualified opportunity zone funds, development funds and the REIT. Since 2012, Capital Square has completed more than $9.1 billion in transaction volume. Capital Square Living, the firm’s property management division, manages more than 13,000 apartments across multiple states.
