Sponsored: Catching the Wave – Surfing for Alternative Asset Managers Wanting to Access Retail Capital

I grew up listening to the Beach Boys. Living in the northeast, my friends and I did not surf. I failed miserably the first time I tried and did not try again for decades. It was my 50th birthday. My wife and I were enjoying our timeshare on Waikiki Beach. I decided I was an embarrassment to my generation, knowing the lyrics to “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Surfin’ Safari,” and “Surfer Girl,” but not knowing how to surf, so I signed up for a private surfing lesson. My instructor was in his early 20s. I knew I had the right instructor when he told me he had been surfing since he was 3 years old but did not surf on the North Shore because he did not have a death wish.
He recommended a long board for a beginner like me. We practiced on the beach the steps for getting up on the board. Then we headed out to catch our first of the 4½ foot waves. I had always wondered what it would be like to catch a wave. I had never thought about what it took to paddle out and get in position to catch a wave. I was in good shape, and I was able to paddle out with my instructor. We waited for the right wave. I started to paddle before it got to me, caught it just right, crouched, stood up on the board, rode it for a few feet and promptly fell, but I had felt that experience of riding a wave that is unique to surfing.
Still able to paddle out, I caught a second and third wave and was able to ride them successfully. My instructor said it was time to go in, but we had time to catch one more wave. That sounded great to me except for one thing … I did not have the energy to paddle out again. He towed me out that last time, and I was able to ride one more wave. On the way in, he yelled to his buddies on the beach.
“Did you see how great my old guy did!” My surfing experience was complete.
Why am I recounting my experience? We all recognize there is a wave of opportunity coming for alternative asset managers as the economy recovers. If you are considering taking advantage of the opportunity by accessing retail capital, you need to understand how the retail capital markets work (which kind of board to use and how to get up on it) and start preparing now (paddling out). We have created an inexpensive educational program at Alliance160 designed to put alternative asset managers in a fully informed position for considering entering the retail capital markets, and we have a highly developed process for entering the retail capital markets. If you are considering entering the retail capital markets, please reach out to us so you can be fully informed as you make what will be critical decisions and can be in position in time to catch the next wave.
